Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Australian Shepherd / Mixed (short coat) : : Male (neutered) : : Adult : : Medium
We were asked to take this dog by a good samaritan in Ga. He was at risk in his first home of being shot, so someone up in Ga kindly took him out of that situation, but he lived outside totally. With the weather becoming cold and even snowy, we were asked if we could take Redford down here in Florida, where he can bask in the warmth and sun, and have the opportunity for a forever home filled with love. He came to us right before Thanksgiving. We think he is an aussie/heeler mix about 18 mos old,58 pounds He loves people and other dogs. Submissive to people, but a bit needy and loves attention.. He does show interest in toys and has a very curious nature. The pictures we saw of him in Ga, showed him playing with sticks, so while his basic needs were being provided, he had little mental stimulation and no social skills taught to him. We are working on house breaking, and indoor manners, ie counter surfing, jumping on people. He is food and attention motivated, so there is much progress to be made and in a short time too. Redford is crated trained, neutered recently, has had all his shots. He does not appear to be sound sensitive, he is great with other dogs. He does want to greet and sniff everyone, and is still learning doggie etiquette amongst his peers, but is making great strides there. For a dog that has been deprived of basic mental stim and social skills, he is doing wonderfully. UPDATE 12/20 We have had Redford almost a month now. He has learned the hierarchy of the pack he lives with, his toilet training has been completed. He loves to play with toys, and sometimes just runs around the yard wtih them in his mouth. He continues to be very friendly and good with other dogs, sometimes to the point of being a pest, so he would do very well with another dog that would welcome a player. He is learning home skills, and the jumping, counter surfing is dwindling down. Redford is ready to move on to his new forever home! He may be a candidate for performance, but certainly he would be a great partner for running, hiking and most any outdoor sport. He is fostered in the Trilby area. Please contact us if you are interested in this handsome boy
