UPDATE! Calico is in need of a quiet FOSTER/FOSTER TO ADOPT home in which to finish his crate rest following heartworm treatment. Crate rest and light activity following treatment is a great bonding and training time!

Calico is an approximately four-to-five year-old, 45-lb Australian cattle dog mix currently being fostered in Fernandina Beach (Amelia Island), FL. This guy is all about the ball and gets so excited to play that he’ll do a little tap dance. He is excellent at playing catch and always brings the ball right back. You might notice his sweet but unusual smile -- most of his front teeth are worn down, we guess from chewing on crate wires after being crated for what must have been interminable hours in his previous life. Cal is extremely smart and attentive and has learned some basic commands including sit, stay, come and leave it. He walks well on a leash and has no issues approaching new dogs and people on a walk. He's also super sweet, especially considering he was not treated well in the past, but he does need time to warm up to strangers. While he does well meeting new people outside the home, his new owners will need to be mindful of his tendency to become protective and cautious when new people enter his home and take steps to prevent that from happening.

Cal needs a calm, herder-savvy, active and training-focused household looking for a fun, up for any activity kind of dog! He would really blossom with additional training to build his confidence and socialization levels and would do best in a cat-free, adult- or older children-only home with a yard. He has been assessed by a certified trainer/behaviorist whose report is available for review. Cal is neutered, up-to-date on vaccines, house- and crate-trained.
